New to Blu: December 29-January 11
Despite its low budget, the direct-to-BD release, Solomon Kane, is said to look “gorgeous” in HD.
It stars James Purefoy as a 17th century troubleshooter and is based on the novels of Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E Howard.
“In addition to the carefully lensed panoramic vistas, there are also a variety of beyond impressive special effects that should warm the hearts of fantasy junkies whose last serious treat was likely Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy,” Blu-ray.com says.
“The final third of the film, in particular, delivers big.”
It rated the video 4/5 while AVForums awarded it 7/10: “The video rendition is pretty good, albeit with a few reservations.
“The detail level is generally very high, with only a few of the more effects-driven shots allowing this to drop off, and the mostly intentional grain only occasionally interfering with said detail.”
Also new from Wednesday is another direct-to-BD release, Beatdown, while Universal Pictures NZ celebrates New Year’s Eve with Beneath Hill 360, Tomorrow When the War Began and Death Race 2.
The only other Blu-ray release between New Year’s Eve and January 9 is South Solitary, a period drama about lighthouse keepers on a remote island just after the end of World War I that reunites Lord of the Rings stars Miranda Otto and Kiwi Marton Csokas.
