HDTV Ratings: July 11

TV One’s HD premiere of Criminal Minds: Suspect Behaviour and TV3’s launch of an HD season of action movies squeezed viewership of TV2’s HD warhorse, Desperate Housewives.

The Criminal Minds spin-off rated almost as well as the season finale of the original, despite tougher competition from TV3’s HD premiere of Fast & Furious.

It drew 10.9% of 25-54 year-olds versus the movie’s 9.6% (which was up 1.6 points on last week’s season finale of CSI).

But with 18-49 year-olds, the race was reversed, with F&F rating 9.5% and Suspect Behaviour, 8.3%; the numbers were similar for household shoppers with kids, too.

Desperate Housewives took a hit in all of these demos as well as TV2’s target audience of 18-39 year-olds, where the rating dropped from 13.8% the previous week to 12%.

The series final of Brothers & Sisters also was down on the penultimate episode, but only marginally.

As Shortland Street builds towards next Monday’s movie-length special, the last of the year’s hour-long episodes rated exceptionally highly, with 27.5% of HHS/kids and 20.4% of 18-39 year-olds, crushing the competition — although TV3’s Road Cops repeat fared batter than TV One’s The Force.

  1. Like most people I watched to see what the new kid on the block was like. I suspect future ratings will be somewhat lower. CM:Suspect Behaviour had big shoes to fill & unfortunately, while entertaining, doesn’t have the same ingredients and character dynamics that make the original CM so enduring. Hoping this series will grow on me. To be fair I initially discounted NCIS: LA but it proved better (though not great) than expected. Perhaps we are becoming spoiled for choice and a little more picky.
